The 10th Congress of ESTROT, the European Society of Tissue Regeneration in Orthopaedics and Traumatology, was held from 11 to 13 June 2026 at Paris Saclay Medical School in Le Kremlin Bicêtre, under the chairmanship of Prof. Thierry Bégué.
Over three days, an international faculty discussed bone defect repair, stem cell therapies, scaffolds and biomaterials, and the treatment of nonunion. Among the speakers was Prof. Alain Masquelet, who delivered a keynote lecture on the origins of the induced membrane technique that carries his name.
Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Balcı joined the faculty for the closing day symposium, which focused on the role of bone transport and the Masquelet technique in the management of segmental bone defects. Speaking alongside Dr. Philipp Lanz of Graz, he presented “Bone Transport with External Fixator or Nail,” drawing on the Istanbul University series to show how defect length, infection history, and clinical context influence the choice of method.
The session carried particular significance because the discussion took place in the presence of Prof. Masquelet, whose work shaped one of the main techniques being debated. It also reflected the current direction of reconstruction surgery, where method selection depends not only on the defect itself, but on infection control, fixation strategy, and the wider treatment plan.
